  • The Design Engineer will research, develop, and design products as directed. Make changes to or modify existing products. Select components and materials. Design welding, fabrication, and assembly fixtures as necessary. Responsible for engineering drawings and accurate bill of materials and routes, and all pertinent documentation as needed. Assist production floor associates in solving problems and improving processes. Perform moderately complex aspects of design and manufacturing engineering.

    Essential Functions of the Job:

    1. Lays out product designs on computer system using CAD software program. Ensures accuracy, structural strength, efficiency, and cost effectiveness of design. Designs parts and assemblies in CAD system, ensuring accuracy of tolerances for proper fit-up of parts in assembly process. May oversee work of CAD Drafter or Engineering Intern in creation of accurate part and assembly drawings.

    2. Creates new product designs and product redesigns with a moderate degree of complexity.

    3. Creates or modifies item records, bill of materials, routes, and other settings in MRP system, as necessary to ensure proper and accurate manufacturing resource planning, production control, and inventory control. May oversee work of CAD Drafter or other individual in creating or modifying MRP records.

    4. Assists production floor in solving problems and improving processes.

    5. Creates product and process documentation as necessary, or assists technical writer or sales support engineer in doing so. Creates accurate, concise, thorough, and clear technical instructions with minimal supervision.

    6. Designs welding, fabrication, and assembly fixtures as necessary. Oversees their accurate construction as necessary.

    7. Assists customer service department in analyzing and solving product problems. May communicate directly with customers in problem analysis and resolution.

    8. Organizes product safety reviews for new or significantly redesigned products as appropriate. Implements changes as necessary based on results of safety reviews.

    9. Conducts research as necessary to understand competitive marketplace, customer requirements for specific projects, purchased component/material selection, or for various other purposes. Sources new vendors on R&D projects as appropriate. Effectively utilizes various resources such as internet searches, communication with vendors, customers, coworkers, or others; field research; or various other resources as necessary.

    10. Effectively manages large scale changes to existing products or MRP settings by researching scope of issue, developing Excel spreadsheets or other tracking tools, overseeing work of Design Drafter or others as necessary, and ensuring all aspects of project completion.

    11. Creates Engineering Change Orders as necessary. Makes changes as required in engineering, and communicates required change actions to other coworkers or departments.

    12. Assists in testing of new or improved products and evaluating performance and structural integrity for approval or problem resolution. Makes changes as required.

    13. Develops engineering, manufacturing, and purchasing standards, and oversees their implementation as appropriate.

    14. Provides assistance and training to other engineering department associates in CAD, MRP, and other areas as necessary.

    15. May be assigned additional responsibilities as necessary.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA's):

    1. Knowledge of part drawings, assembly drawings, and design layouts required. Proficiency with 3D CAD software required. Proficiency with SolidWorks software preferred. Strong computer skills including Excel and Word required.

    2. Strong aptitude for design of parts, weldments, and kinematic assemblies required. Knowledge of stress analysis and engineering design standards required. Experience with FEA analysis desirable.

    3. Knowledge of steel manufacturing (fabrication and welding) equipment and processes desirable. Ability to effectively apply engineering and problem-solving skills in real-world manufacturing environment required.

    4. Ability to quickly develop proficiency with JD Edwards (ERP), including ability to thoroughly understand and operate engineering, production control, and inventory control modules of the system.

    5. Excellent communication skills required, both oral and written. Ability to communicate instructions from a technical perspective required.

    6. Ability to effectively oversee and mentor the work of others.

    7. Ability to plan, prioritize and organize required.

    Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field required, or a combination of years of experience and education.

    • Previous engineering experience working in a manufacturing / industrial environment.
