Attract Quality People to Apply For Your Positions

Hiring the right people is a key to any business's success - in fact, I truly believe that if one had to choose only a single thing to focus on, it would be hiring these people. With that said, I find it quite disturbing that most companies I come across skip the most vital part of the hiring process- enticing employed people to apply for their positions. As a result, such companies ultimately attract and are limited to the talents of the most active job seekers. Based on many surveys, the majority of working people feels at least somewhat dissatisfied with aspects of their current jobs; however, most are not aggressive at all about looking for other job opportunities. Explaining this conflict is complicated, but I believe the primary reason for many people not seeking other positions is fairly simple - finding a new job is one of the most painful and frustrating experiences people need to go through in their professional lives. Job search involves many painstaking tasks, including: updating one's resume, spending time and energy reviewing different job openings, and often interviewing for positions one is not really interested in, or is unqualified to pursue. To make matters worse, looking for a new job has an additional complication - revealing one's identity. Candidates pursuing new positions take the risk of losing their current jobs if their employers find out about their active job search. What if prospective candidates could anonymously explore possible new career opportunities by asking hiring managers questions about their job openings, so they can better evaluate whether they indeed want and are qualified to pursue these new opportunities before ever applying? And what if candidates could quickly and easily interact online with hiring managers, providing relevant information without revealing their identities and without submitting their resumes, so hiring managers can quickly focus only on the few best-fit people before having to ask for one's identity, and before any interview needs to take place? Companies choosing to introduce these new job search methodologies can reduce or even eliminate many of the barriers and risks that prevent many employed people from exploring and pursuing their positions, and will consequently gain access to a better and greater selection of candidates. In addition, companies can substantially decrease their cost per hire and their hiring cycles by eliminating the need to review countless resumes, and to conduct many unnecessary interviews. Understanding how quality "passive" people would like to explore new opportunities and providing the right means to encourage them to pursue new career opportunities is a key to ultimately hiring them. Unless companies are willing to hire primarily the most active job seekers and live with the consequences, they must not assume quality people will simply fall into their laps - they need to take the steps to make sure they do.
