Bargain Healthcare

I wonder how the American public feels about cheap, generic, drugs. Retailers like CVS and Walgreens have been offering them for years, but now they will have to compete with retail giant Walmart, once again, and it’s “shockingly cheap drug plan.”

For people on Medicare, starting January 1st (although you can sign up starting in November) it will cost only $14.80 a month to receive prescription medication. This is, apparently, less than half what people pay on the Medicare plan.

From living in Europe for three years now, I know the benefit of generic drugs (and free healthcare). It’s good when there is competition so that drug companies get a little worried. My mother suffers from migraines and sometimes has to pay more than $100 for just one pill! Madness. While she doesn’t qualify for Medicare I’m sure there is someone like her on it.

Whereas in Europe you can get something so useful like birth control, for example, for free (generic brands usually). Instead of the $90 for three months worth of pills without insurance (or the $10 a month with insurance). True story.

Once the healthcare bill starts churning I hope options like these are all over the news.
