It might seem like all administrative jobs are the same, but employers actually hire employees for two different types of jobs. An executive assistant is someone who primarily works with supervisors and those in higher-level positions, while an administrative assistant can work with a larger number of people. The two jobs share many of the same skills, including supporting executives and communicating with coworkers.

 

Any type of executive must possess certain traits and skills before applying for an open position. An executive assistant typically works for a specific person within the company. As an assistant, you're responsible for scheduling any meetings that the supervisor must attend, working on new projects, filing important documents and serving as the head of various assignments. While such assistants have more job responsibilities, they typically make less each year than normal assistants make. The position requires that you support the executive with any of his needs, which might include knowing the individual's personal schedule or handling issues that the person has outside of work.

 

An administrative assistant is someone who has a broader job description. Instead of working for a specific person, you might work with dozens of different people every day, and you're responsible for meeting the needs of each person. An administrative assistant answers the phone, handles questions and complaints from customers, file documents when needed, works with clients in person, and completes everyday tasks like making coffee for the office. Employers may pay administrative help by the hour, though some companies offer an annual salary that includes benefits. Both assistants need strong communication skills and the ability to converse with multiple people every day.

Employers running green companies use specific products and services that won't harm the environment, and the companies work hard to reduce the footprint that the businesses leave behind. The employer might want someone with experience using newer programs or someone who can discuss different issues relating to the environment. You'll want to know about recycling programs in the area, sustainability issues, and types of alternative energy.

 

Working as an administrative assistant requires a variety of skills. Those working for executives need to be able to handle the needs of one person and support that person at work. Executives look for employees with strong communication skills and those with the ability to tackle projects quickly. As an administrative assistant, you work with a larger number of people, and you'll handle day-to-day tasks like answering the phones and filing, but you'll find that many of these positions pay more.
