Working for Paris Hilton or Matt Damon? Life as a Celebrity Administrative Assistant

Posted by

A celebrity administrative assistant handles the errands, daily schedule, travel and appearances of such high profile individuals as athletes, musicians, politicians or actors.

To become a celebrity administrative assistant, you'll need to be organized, used to working in a fast paced environment, and be on-call 24/7. Most high profile people like their administrative assistants to be computer savvy and will prefer a college graduate. A knowledge of accounting and bookkeeping can also be helpful in managing a celebrity’s budget. An event planning or public relations background can come in handy as well, since many celebrities will expect you to handle events and PR.

You may want to begin your career in this field by working as a corporate administrative assistant—ideally for the president of a large company. This will give you the background you need in planning itineraries and travel plans, scheduling meetings, and even running some personal errands. It will help you get your feet wet in working and pleasing high powered individuals and the hectic lifestyles they lead.

With this experience under your belt, you can start your search for celebrity administrative positions. Unless you know a celebrity personally, you'll have to go through their publicist, manager or agent. You can usually find these people on a celebrity's official website or you can simply contact their studio or label.

Contacts in the high profile celebrity business can come from anyone and anywhere. Writers, Actors or Directors Guild events and functions are a great place to mine for contacts. As are volunteering for unpaid positions in political campaigns, TV shows or films. Let people know you want to become a celebrity personal assistant. Keep your ears to ground and be open for any entry-level opportunity.
