Zeroing in on that Dream Admin Job

Don Trump said, "Love what you do and you won't fail." That applies to most any job, including administrative work. Sure, you have to pay your dues and hone your skills, which may be difficult at times. But after you've reached a certain level of competence, you'll need to evaluate your admin career and decide if your work truly makes you happy. Some tips:

Follow Your Heart. Consider what you love to do in your spare time or hobby. If your admin job uses those same skills, you've found your calling. If, for example, you like to sail or fish alone, you may need a job that has you working by yourself most of the time. If you like sailing with a crew, then go for positions that involve lots of teamwork and interplay. You should, as many successful individuals have often noted, "love to come to work in the morning."

Follow Your Values. Your admin job should reflect your core values. Does the company recognize the values of family, loyalty and truth? Do they run their business with the highest ethics? Do they support your need for spending time with your children and spouse? In short, your culture should dovetail with their corporate culture.

Follow Advice. Seek the advice and work with a reputable staffing agency to help you explore a variety of admin career opportunities. Staffing agents work with hundreds of companies each year. They have their "ears to the ground" and can set you up with temporary or temp-to-hire posts. This will give you a feel for the industry, company, and position before you make a long-term commitment.
