Also known as additive manufacturing, 3D printing is a revolutionary technology that is taking the manufacturing industry by storm. Harvard Business Review even claims that 3D printing is ushering in a new era as prices drop and new applications for the technology are uncovered. Use a number of accessible platforms to learn more about the technology that allows you to print complex objects after designing them using a software.

Websites

Several reputable business and technology websites have been documenting the uses, equipment and news surrounding the groundbreaking technology. These include Forbes, Physics.org by the IOD Institute of Physics, PC Mag and Extreme Tech. Successful blogs, such as 3D Printing and 3D Printing for Beginners, are also helpful, offering numerous articles that explain the materials and software used, as well as the printers themselves.

Classes

If you are looking for a more professional, in-depth introduction to the emerging technology, classes are a great option. Reputable classes are held by independent businesses, such as Shapeways, and colleges, such as New York University, James Madison University and many others. These classes teach you first-hand how to operate a 3D printer, how to design objects using 3D printing software and how to apply the printing processes to your own needs. Consider taking a class or two if you are looking to use 3D printing for professional purposes or if you would like to use it in your future career.

Seminars

If you are interested in keeping up with the latest news and technology surrounding 3D printing, search for seminars taking place in your area. CNCTimes, Rutgers University and the University of North Dakota have all held successful seminars relating to additive manufacturing. Due to the fact that 3D printing is still on the rise, some companies, such as 3D Systems, have offered a number of free seminars to promote new the new technology. 3D Systems planned a total of 324 seminars between March 22 and July 24, 2014, giving impressive overviews of the latest advances.

Books

If you are interested in 3D printing as a hobby, you may want to skip the expensive classes and invest in a high-quality book, such as "3D Printing for Dummies," "Design and Modeling for 3D Printing" or "Make: The Ultimate Guide to 3D Printing." If you are interested in the subject but are not looking for instruction, consider "Fabricated: The New World of 3D Printing" or "3D Printing: The Next Industrial Revolution."

Due to the current popularity of the subject, information about 3D printing is readily available on the Internet. However, be sure to glean knowledge from reputable sources before investing in a 3D printer to ensure you know what you are getting into. Whether you work within the rapidly changing manufacturing industry or you are involved in prototype design, learning about 3D printing is a wise move considering how quickly it is replacing traditional manufacturing methods.

Not my comment either... sure wish I could remove it! I'm in a job search also & would like to remove Confidential U's comment. All I have to say is, remove any CHECK MARKS that are usually at the bottom of the agreement/privacy section. That's where the Back to School info hides. I'm a victim of that too...and unwanted downloads. Good luck in your search....we are not getting any younger, but we are hard workers & have higher work ethics than the young in's!
